PC Computer Crashing

It's a very common problem this and can be caused by loads of different things. It's odd though that recently I've had the same symptoms caused by the same disease.

Basically a PC slowing down and eventually locking up or crashing, looking at the BIOS the CPU temperature is very high!

If you then look at the CPU fan and heatsink it's like the inside of vacuum cleaner. Remove all the dust put the Heatsink back on and off we go. PC runs stable.

My son's PC had this with his graphics card, games crashing and locking up. The heatsink / fan on the graphics card, same treatment though worked like a charm.

Block Sites On a Network

A customer wanted me to block sites on their network, mainly facebook thankfully they had a netgear router which made it pretty easy.

I could have done it by editing the hosts file. This file is just a plain text file that lives on your computer. It has entries that kind of look like:

127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com
So when a user would surf to a site, Microsoft Windows automatically checks to see if the address is located in the Hosts file. The number shown, 127.0.0.1, is the "loop back" IP address of your own computer, so when the PC looks for facebook.com Windows skips the link to the site (facebook) and moves on. So it can't load any programs, spyware, html anything on that domain.

The Host file can be editied with Notepad so browse for the file, e.g. Windows XP, the file is located in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc folder, open it it with notepad and add any sites you want to block by typing 127.0.0.1 e.g.

127.0.0.1 facebook.com

would block facebook.com.

Trillian The Choice

After a week or so the Instant Messenger I'm running with is Trillian. It's miles better than Messenger, less overhead and certainly not bloatware.

Was a close call between that and GAIM but Trillian is marginally slicker and just felt like really.
