Busy Busy

On a mission at the moment to get a project off the ground the snow has not helped but in South Wales roads have remained clear. Did a major job on the drive with a mass of grit so should be able to get into work with ease.

Blog wise been quiet as have a major project on the go prior to Christmas. Met up with an old friend today who was in good health and spirits which was great.

Had to reminisce to a dark time in my history where a business I had went pop but when I look back despite the hangover of that business can still be positive about some things, certainly found out who my friends were or were not anyway :)

Got my little girl set up with a blog today she is only eight but she was gobsmacked at how easy it all was, bought her a domain as well www.jessielou.co.uk (not set up yet). Actually she should be able to keep that for life (name is Jessica Louise Phillips) even when she gets married and makes me a grandfather (shudders, that is scary).

The Town was an awesome film, maybe one the best this year although Kick Ass was this year so maybe not the very best film.

Been watching 30 Rock which is easy to watch a little off the wall, Peep Show back, amazing, and did start to watch Curb Your Enthusiasm but Curb is a hard watch, very very cringe worthy.

RPF End of Era

Well my time at Right Price Furniture came to an end on Friday and it has been an interesting three years.

Of all the places I have worked I would say pretty amazing that so many could get on so well given their different backgrounds. I do not think I have seen that before, it was pretty closely knit when I think about it. Anyway some gerat people, joy to work with.

Sad but these things happen, never look back in anger is my motto :)

My most immediate concern now is how to pay the mortgage next week, we, the family could eat into some very slim savings but hopefully that will not be needed.

I have managed to get my 40 odd websites generating a little cash but it is a long way from being anything other than pocket money. Actually given the time I have invested I think I might have been better off working in Tesco, doh.

On that note over the weekend I did buy some more shopping themed sites, Sofas Beds Sale and Futons For Sale.

Sofa Beds is one area that the Internet might be late to make an impact as a vital part of the decision to buy is the quality of the opening mechanism.

More News on Job Front

We have been told that the proposed merger with the company that was going to take over the business has now fallen through. So it is about time I polished up my freelance website.

I suppose my most immediate way of getting work is going back to what I know best and that is basic IT Support Wales. However over the last three years I have spent much of it looking at Adwords in an attempt to get the very best value.

The main thing with Adwords is ROI and to be very creative when looking for the various terms to bid on and then to spend a lot of time in Google Analytics measuring the success or lack thereof on various strategies.

Looking around at various websites gives me a lot of encouragement as some major national retailers are making basic errors. Even the company that was supposed to taking over, themselves a major on-line retailer I still felt I could have made a big impact.

Recently I went to Google's Headquarters in Dublin, whilst they have many young intelligent highly motivated staff they do lack a few years experience in a highly competitive sales environment which is something I draw on a lot.

I have enjoyed my time at Right Price Furniture as a Marketing guru and I have learned an awful lot so I have no regrets there.

Out of Work

Well it is almost official now out of work from w/c 13th December 2010 already one offer of work in though so it is not all doom and gloom.

As things stand though it is freelance which is good and bad, a little less secure for sure.

Time to polish up the CV methinks.

Comments in Blog Posts

A curious thing by default blog comments are tagged with 'nofollow'. I understand why this is encouraged by Google as it stops spammers getting free links.

I have been thinking though that as long as comments are relevant and contribute something then why shouldn't I allow comments and their websites to be followed.

After all they are contributing to my site so the least i can do is follow.

So websites posted in comments are followed but they are moderated so no Viagra or sex sites please.

Pirate Bay Convictions but Torrents Live on

Just reading on ZDNET that the media suits are still chasing Pirate Bay.
Three of the four people convicted of contributing to copyright infringement for their roles in running The Pirate Bay have had their custodial sentences reduced, but have also had the amount of damages they must pay increased.
Do people still use torrents? Why? Makes little sense.

Anyway despite all this the Pirate Bay site lives on and has a Page Rank of 7! Methinks Google are sticking to their neutral policy on this one then.

Of course every news story contains a link to Pirate Bay and News site carry a lot of weight so making Pirate Bay a mega super important site. Nice one media suits, did not get it shut down, made Google love the site and get it loads of publicity.

Hitchens Does God Exist Debate

Thought Christopher Hitchens did a good job in this debate, although Dembski seemed to be saying that without religion there are no morals. Overall felt Dembski limped and stumbled over the whole debate.

The crowd was pro religion so maybe in a different audience it would have come across a lot worse for him.

Anyway you can see it here:-

Download Call of Duty Black Ops

I think piracy is bad and after only a day the game is cracked and ready for download on the Internet. It's a bad rap for PC games as this will sale and as a result future development.

In saying that I can also see that Pirate XBOX and PS3 games doing the rounds, I suppose the battle against piracy can only be won by doing it online so having great game content online is the way to go.

Green Roofs

I'm not a natural conspiracy theory nut but since buying Car EV domain it led me into buying a few green type domains and then looking at renewable energy.

The new Feed In Tariff or FIT looks set to provoke a load of green roof systems to that end I've bought Cheap Solar Tiles, which is going to look at the cheapest possible green roof tiles, Buy Solar Tiles which will focus on buying them and finally Best Solar Tiles which will act as a review site looking at ease of installation and cost combined.

Lots of work to get this up and running though.

Why Evolution has left us with Humans prone to Religion

I know Richard Dawkins has already put this across in his many excellent books but sometimes a shortened layman's view is interesting.

To the subject at hand, intuition is at play, say many years ago your forgaging for food and one of your fellow tribesmen spots a berry tree and eats the fruit.

Hours later he's dead, your intuition tells you don't eat those berries. Fair enough, the individuals that have this trait, i.e. intuition, prosper, the ones that don't die.

However say you kill a cow and later that day there is an earthquake, intuition would tell you don't kill cows, bad things happen.

For a prehistoric man it's a short step from there to conclude that something controls the sun rising in the sky and the birds and the bee's.

In the modern scientific age we would look to prove or disprove that the man died from the berries, maybe it was a heart attack after all. The prehistoric man doesn't have that luxury.

Why are most religions full of it

Lets look at the ten commandments.

1. You shall have no other gods before me.
Erm I'll make my own mind up thanks.
2. You shall not make for yourselves an idol.
Again personal choice.
3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
What? I don't have a god thanks so I'll use it as I see fit, freedom of speech and all that.
4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
No thanks
5. Honour your father and your mother.
Think that is a fair comment, we're at five before I agree.
6. You shall not murder.
Not even mass murderers? Agree with the sentiment but dictating freedom of speech on the death penalty can't really agree with that. It's up for debate.
7. You shall not commit adultery.
Fair enough you might want to try and get Christians to follow that though.
8. You shall not steal.
Ho hum, would I pirate a Microsoft product having watched Pirates of Silicon Valley.... No of course not! :) I did tape off the radio when I was a kid, that's stealing so can't really go full on this one.
9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbour.
What does this mean lying? Sometimes lying is the best thing to do I won't do examples but white lies are white sometimes.
10. You shall not covet.
Ok that's the entire Western economy screwed, I want an iPhone.

I got one for you it should be number one it bright bold letters

1. 'Don't sexually abuse children'

Will Google Rule the World

The company I work for as Marketing Director spends a huge amount of cash with Google on advertising. We got invited to the Google Dublin Headquarters for a bit of one on one time with our adwords account manager and to attend the various seminars being held at the same time.

Although I could blog at length about this I just wanted to make some general observations. Despite spending vast sums of money on advertising, there is no way to influence google organic listings it is run separately, our MD would not believe that yet I'm sold.

The adwords staff will literally do anything they can to help but ask them advice on SEO and they'll flat out say, 'look I can't do a thing.'

What better way to remain the best search engine that to keep it 100% clean of any commercial involvement. I wouldn't trust Microsoft to do this for definite.

The second thing I felt was how Google try to estimate the future and then to positions themselves on the crest of that wave. They do this with modesty though, you listen to Microsoft and how wonderful Vista was (not) and it's corporate nonsense but Google will tell you how they going to make say Chrome better rather than spend too much time telling you how great it is now.

I think Google have it just right and despite me being the type that likes to dislike the 'man' this corporation, Google, has got my utmost respect.

I know sound like a fanboi but it is hard not to be.

My Bejeweled Blitz Record so Far and Pain

Ohhh I don't even think Bevla will catch me this week! She's normally got me in her pocket, so wind up mode engaged:)

In fairness Bev is pretty dam fine adversary and will probably beat me the next ten weeks on the bounce.

Still nice score for me though.

Had minor operation on a few blocked cysts on my eyes under local anaesthetic. When the were putting a stitch in the eyelid it wasn't what I would describe as my best experience in life.

They do say a little suffering is good for the soul, pity I don't believe in any of that nonsense :(

Burning the Koran Good?

Read about a few kids that had posted up a You Tube vid that they had burned the Koran and then getting charged. I think it's out of order burning a book, although that is just my opinion I suppose, if you have the opinion that it isn't out of order then it's against the law.

So freedom of expression has pretty much gone out of the window, odd really when I grew up this was something that defined us and we were proud of our heritage phrases like 'our grandparents fought two world wars for freedom of speech'. Think the politically correct lot have given that up in a rush of political correctness.

Anyway I don't think burning a book is ever a good idea and the laws of the land state it's incitement to racial hatred. However a religion isn't a race, which is odd as when you draw a cartoon seems like it's fine to burn a British Flag and have slogans like 'kill the infidel' can't seem to recall anyone getting charged over that.

Andoid Phone Fanboi

I have become an Android Fanboi, it's sad quite prepared to get into a debate with any iPhone user over the merits of Android. To that end I bought another domain with a view to reviewing all sorts of things to do with Android operating system.

I always want better so was looking for the current Top Android Phone and when I couldn't find a site offering that information on the current best phone out there bought the domain.

How to Save Streaming Video

Common question and often linked to the question How do you save You Tube Videos to your computer.

There is a cracking peice of software or website out there that does this called Keepvid. So just search for Keepvid and your away.

The killer app as it's often called is the ability to drag a link to your links toolbar and then when your watching a youtube vid click it and you'll be taken to keepvid with links to download the video in a variety of formats.

I can't link to them as I'm not sure if it's legal so you'll have to find it yourself.

Burning the Koran

Good grief another big fuss over this. I think the guy who's doing it is a nut job, a brave nut job but a nut job all the same. Very religious as well so the very best flavour.

Most of the press seem to be filling their pants though and I thought at least one world leader would have quoted Voltaire.
I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.
Actually I don't think Voltaire did say that but it's his sentiment. Billy seems to have it sorted out in his own mind anyway.

Data Recovery Linux Drive Using Windows XP

To add to the confusion this drive was a Raid drive. A Western Digital Network storage drive had failed and I was left trying to recover data. As the NAS hardware had failed I was fighting an uphill battle trying to recover the data.

Maybe it was my searching being too preoccupied with the Raid issue anyway very simple elegant piece of software. Explore 2fs, simple no nonsense that worked first time without any fuss.

Quite a Scary Walk

This path now acts as an approach to Makinodromo. It is a famous climbing sector of El Chorro in Spain's Andalucia.

This area of El Chorro situated in the south of Spain is renowned amongst travellers and hikers for its amazing scenery and climbs.

However this is not the main attraction on offer, El Chorro is host to one of the most dangerous walkways in the world, built by workers to transport materials between the Chorro and Gaitanejo Falls

Inception - Movie of the Year?

There have been some good mvoies of late, I enjoy a lot of the ones that are not quite mainstream for example Mary and Max and Temple Grandin recently but this one is way out there.

It's not a popcorn movie and you have to concentrate but it was A1 I can't see any film topping it in the next six months anyway.

Newsgroup Update and Google Andriod Rocks

Well I'm very pleased thus far with News Demon no complaints at all. There are cheaper options out there but I do like a bit of security and I think with them being one of the big names you get that.

In other news my Google phone HTC Hero is great since it has been updated to Andriod 2.1 and the Meridian Andriod Video / Media player is very solid.

This combined with Win FF works fine as a MP4 player. I've found I still get lip sync issues but if I kill meridian with Task Killer it works like a charm.

More News Servers Mini Reviews

My Newsdemon trial is over and overall they're getting the vote wanted to work through a couple more see if I could get better value.

I tried Binverse and frankly don't bother whilst Newsdemon was a breeze to set-up Binverse seem to want you to use their software. You can log in using third party software but the trial is limited in some way.

As soon as I read 'you can only get using our software' the account was cancelled.

Not one byte of data was downloaded.

Changing News Server

Times are tough currently so I'm on economy drive whilst Giganews have been excellant there are cheaper options out there. After a bit of digging I've decided that my first one to try will be News Demon.

They've had some good reviews, have good retention etc. I suspect Giganews is still the premium service but at a premium price.

Pretty simple to set up, SSL as well and pretty fast. We'll see how this trial goes and then change to them if they are good enough.

HTC Hero and Andriod 2.1 Review

Finally Orange get the 2.1 Android Operating System on my HTC Hero and I must say it owns!

So quick now really pleased I got this phone now finally it does compare to the iPhone.

Strategically Google have to have a big input on Smart Phones as moving forward they'll be used more and logically will be used for searching more. If your long term plans are to remain the No.1 search engine then Google will have an OS that controls which search engine is used.

Microsoft seem far too late to the party!

Win FF The Best Video Convertor

I have tried many many video converters and I stumbled upon WinFF Video Convertor, quite simply the best video converter around. Clean quick no nonsense, I just hope the author doesn't get head-hunted by some big software company.

I wish all software was like this.

Andriod Marketplace is Awful

Browser app called app brain which seems to be a browser based system and then you have to log into it and download it on your phone.

Then when I try install something 'no results found'. I search for an app I want in the marketplace and 'no results found'.

It is shockingly bad, if you can afford an iPhone buy one of them if your on a budget then prepare for frustration as you'll have to put up with this really bad system.

Archos MP4 Players Review and HTC Hero

Odd title I know but I've owned an Archos 605 since it came out and it's been top drawer. A few complaints that it wouldn't do some HD formats until upgraded but other than that it plays everything flawlessly.

Thing is it's getting old so had my eye out for a replacement and was rather hoping the HTC Hero phone would suffice as an MP4 player.

It's quite a nice phone but it's no iPhone by a long way and as an mp4 player next to useless.

It's so fussy what it plays and then most of the time suffers from Lip Sync issues, there is talk of an HTC Hero update for Orange customers to fingers crossed this will solve this issue.

Going to have to read up either fix the HTC Hero phone so it can play a passable quality file with lip sync issues or buy another MP4 players.

I'm not sure I'd buy another Archos for the simple reason it's not that portable.

A Cruise Critic

Holiday wise we're pretty avid cruisers as a family. In the last few years we've done four cruises, three with P&O and one on the Queen Mary 2.

Tomorrow we set sail on board the P&O Ship Ventura and as this is brand spanking new ship for PO Cruises I thought I'd buy yet another domain.

So now I'm a cruise critic quite a nice domain I'm sure you'll agree! I'm going to start off the cruise critic website with almost a daily post of the ship as we cruise around.

Ban the Darth Vadar Outfit, I mean Ban the burka

I was going to do a post about this but Pat Condell covers it such detail:-

Wednesday, 14 July 2010

Another Cruise on PO Ship Ventura

Just a a short cruise starts tomorrow I'll be posting up thoughts on this ship on my return.

We start at Southampton, two stops in Ireland, one in France, one in Spain and back to Southampton. Seven days in all but it's the definitive way to travel if you ask me.

Ouch Recurring Conjunctivitis

Do you know I spelt that right first time, Conjunctivitis, Anyway been suffering with this lately and it's weird because the Doctors has given me Chloromycetin or Chloraphecicol as it's known.

The symptoms have cleared up if I use it for a week or so then it comes back. Anyway went to the Docs (third time) with a very red eye and she's know given me Fucithalmic.

It was odd whilst waiting for the prescription a woman said to the lady serving at the pharmacist 'you got hayfever?' and she said 'No it's an infection' then the woman explained she had that a few weeks back and couldn't get rid of the eye infection.

What is there a pandemic of eye infections in Swansea?

Swansea City Fan Blog

I thought I'd start a blog just musing over being a Swansea City Fan. Today I note that Gary Speed is now Odds on for the position!

I don't know if I'll keep it up normally get all wound up being a Swans fan:)

Thursday, 8 July 2010

John Hartson for Swansea Manager?

I see the Evening Post last night were talking up John Hartson. I think this would be a mistake we need someone with a proven track record.

I know Swansea isn't a massive club but at this stage of the clubs development we can't afford to give someone a 'try'.

As much as I respect John Hartson and his recent troubles, why didn't he sign for the Swans as a youth. Will have to check that out.

New Swansea City FC Manager Odds

VC Bet are running a book on the next Swansea Manager. Here are the current prices:-

Paul Tisdale he was quick to dismiss it a year ago now though:-
"One day I will move on when it is right to do so — but I am not looking to move."

You see that 'looking to move' not 'I'm not moving'. He's clear favourite anyway if you look at the odds.
"It is conjecture. It is not relevant because it has not been put to me or the club. There has been no contact at all"
That's almost inviting the approach isn't it.

Weird how these things play out in football. Personally I'm not sorry to see Sousa go form went out of the window last season and when that happens you have to look to the manager. Not convinced with Sousa's signings either.

I'd quite like to see Chris Coleman come home! He got a raw deal at Fulham and now Swansea seems right for him somehow. Apparently though he's reluctant to take it as it's too close to home.

Gus Poyet then when he was at Leeds he had them purring!

Super Freakamonics

Actually that should be spelt super freakonomics. I've been listening to the audio book. What can you say the writers continue to look at stats from a unique angle and come up with some amazing conclusions.

Enjoyed immensely.

123-reg and Blogger

Seems the correct way to set the A record is not

A 216.239.32.21

but

@ A 216.239.32.21

Not sure on the relevance of the @ on DNS settings but it seems to act like a wild card entry.

It works anyway mexicanpinefurniture.co.uk now bounces to the www.

XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death Woes

My son's old XBOX had the RROD and I'd heard of the towel trick but there is a much simpler solution. I fixed it with Cotton wool buds!

Basically:-
  1. Put two cotton wool boards in the rear of the XBOX half way in to jam the fans.
  2. Turn on XBOX if you can't hear the fans turning then you've done it correctly.
  3. Wait until three red lights turn to two red lights
  4. Disconnect Power and leave for 20 minutes for it to cool down.
  5. It should now work.
This isn't my video but...

I then striped it down and gave it a good clean with the vacuum cleaner and then used a laptop cooling board whilst using it (this is powered by USB so used the rear XBOX USB port).

So far it's been stable. The DVD drive is playing up though, early XBOX 360 pretty shoddy all round from Microsoft.

Still we'd written the dam thing off so quite happy.

More Blogger DNS Settings

Was having trouble with a few domains, it seems the 'A' record needs to be set as well. So the full DNS settings should be:-

asossale.co.uk A 216.239.32.21
asossale.co.uk A 216.239.34.21
asossale.co.uk A 216.239.36.21
asossale.co.uk A 216.239.38.21
www CNAME ghs.google.com.

Note the trailing dot on the CNAME record.

I think I'll see if that domain is fixed tomorrow as the DNS records take a while to propagate.

Legoland Windsor Tip

Went to Lego-land Windsor on a short break this weekend. Not much to do for my 13 year old son but my daughter who's 6 really enjoyed.

Stayed at the Hilton in Bracknell which was functional although a little high end food wise for the kids.

When we walked in and one of first rides is the rapids and my wife wanted to queue straight off I was convined it would be quieter later as people ventured deeper into the park. The wait time at 11am was 45 minutes.

I won the argument at 3pm the wait time was just 15 minutes!

Whats the Differance between a Laptop and a Notebook

Got asked this the other day and it's interesting. Short answer not a lot, practially a notebook is normally smaller and portable.

Normally a notebook is under 15" screen and a laptop is anything bigger but integral monitor and keyboard. So a notebook is a small laptop and a laptop is a computer that's not a desktop.

Does that make sense?

Avioding Speeding Fines

For a number of years I worked in Cardiff and travelling from Swansea every day resulted in me having a lot of Speeding Tickets.

In two years I had the dreaded notice of intended prosecution around 12 times. Yet I never got one point and managed to avoid them all.

As a result this has inspired me to start up Speeding Points, I plan to update fairly regular so if you get a speeding fine it might be worth checking out.

Kick Ass Mini Movie Review

Wow I can't quite put my finger on it but it should be bloody awful, it's cheesy popcorn type movie but somehow it's is A1.

The casting and dialogue just seems to fit and even though it's so obvious what is going to happen and you shouldn't give a dam what happens to the characters, I seemed to care!

Best film I've seen in the last year easy.

Porthcawl Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society

A colleague of mine does some voluntary work for the charity organisation Porthcawl Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society, I helped him out sort their website using blogger.

It's fairly easy to do this:-

1) Log onto 123-reg
2) Click on the domain you want to manage
3) Select Manage DNS
4) Delete all entrys (assuming you want no email to come from this domain)
5) Add a new entry which should read as follows www cname ghs.google.com.

NOTE: ghs.google.com. (<---- Not the trailing dot)

I think the site looks pretty decent!

Excel & VLookup

After a lot of lost hair finally managed to get this working. Mistake I was making was having duplicate records in the lookup part.

VLOOKUP(lookup_value,table_array,col_index_num,range_lookup,FALSE)

The range_lookup is the part to remeber and FALSE must be inserted otherwise it returns the nearest value it could fine.

2012 Movie Review

Short version: Dire

Long Version: Hollywood at it's worse chuck in a few stars, loads of special effects, predictable dialogue and script and vola you have two and half hours of your life chucked away. It felt like ten hours.

In some weird cheesy way it was mildy entertaining. My IMDB Score: 4, It gets 6 on IMDB, 2012 IMDB Link.

Lliw Resovior, Swansea Easter Monday Walk

We often go here for a walk and what can do you on Bank Holidays, read up a bit on it's history.

The dam holding the Lower Lliw reservoir was completed in 1867. However it devolped a leak, so was kept at a low level. That was until 1979 when it was rebuilt 112 years after first being constructed. I'm sure I've read they started it in 1862 so spent five years building it for it not to work. Phew bet the guy in charge of that took some stick!

The reservoir originally supplied water to Swansea area, but now after being treated at the nearby Felindre Water Works, the water is pumped all over South Wales.

More Domains

I let these run out but I enjoy blogging so much I bought them again.

Furniture Choices
Mainly reviews about furniture, going to let rip on this one! I've had this domain for ages so it's about time I used it.

Furniture Wiki
Basically a list of furniture facts complied by a colleague.

Late Frog Spawn

Took my little girl over 'the field' (that's what we called this area as a kid). I spent much of my youth fascinated with frogs and newts, hey no Xbox in those days!

Two things spring to mind the frog spawn seems late this year only just hatched in much of the pond and the area is decimated with bikes riding through the shallow pools.

Harsh winter Frogs must hibernate longer.

A Victory for Freedom of Speech & Another Furniture Blog

I think the news that the Science writer has won the appeal against chiropractor. It's a victory for freedom of speech in my book.

I'm still buying domains if a good one comes up this time it's Mexican Pine Furniture. I do have quite a few furniture blogs now and generally their tips on how or where to buy. Need to keep them low profile though as in one of them I do almost accuse some manufacturers of operating a pricing cartel.

I stand by that but also could get into a bit of trouble.

I can say in other places I've worked it's really common practice for some big name brands to insist that retailers / wholesalers stick to their pricing policy. In my view this is against anti-competition laws if not in practice then in ethics, if that makes sense.

Yeah power to the people, here is an extract from the idea:-

Petrol Prices have began to creep up to the 120p a litre mark again and this was when Oil prices were $140 now they are approx $80 and prices are 111p, imagine if the Oil price hits $140 again we will end up paying 150p a litre if not more.

See what you think and pass it on if you agree with it.
We are hitting 111p a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced with paying £ 1.20 a ltr. Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:
This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a certain day campaign that was going around last April or May!

The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join in!

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the market place not sellers.
With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP.

If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!
Now, don't whimp out on me at this point... keep reading! and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least 50 more (50 x 10 = 500)... and those 500 send it to at least 50 more (500 x 50 = 25,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THIRTY MILLION consumers!
If those thirty million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 300 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it... .. THREE BILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all You have to do is invite this to 50 people. That's all.(and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take?
If each of us sends this email out to 50 more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!!

Acting together we can make a difference If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES.

I think this is a great idea it's just needs enough people, so pass it on and get it done!

One minor question I'd have is that Esso and BP will probarly have a hand in the Supermarket distribution. In saying that it should work out ok if the managers of these BP stations going running off crying to BP and Essso so that we can at least achieve something.

A Christian Getting Upset with an Atheist

Had a debate today with a colleague, the subject was religion again. It all started when I claimed I couldn't provide any evidence that would disprove God, hypothetically speaking. However I would change my view should the evidence arrive.

He then started claiming that Jesus was a true historical figure and I said the evidence for that was not very clear. Even if I accepted that there was an historical figure called Jesus it didn't prove he was the son of God or that God existed.

I then explained that IF Jesus existed then he could have been a David Blaine / Derren Brown type. Ohhh he got upset at that, he was insulted.

I then said that was ridiculous and this summed up my entire objection with religion. I said your free to criticise my views but I'm not free to criticise yours. He ended with it was fine to criticise views but in terms of religion one should show a degree of restraint.

I will not!

Harry Carpenter RIP

I felt Harry Carpenter was an absolute diamond and sad to hear he has died.

The BBC have the Harry Carpenter Obituary for me the commentary and sense of occasion he communicated in the 1989 Bruno v Tyson fight was unsurpassed.

A genuine sporting legend.

Never go into Business with Friends

Some time back I had my own computer shop, first few years things were going ok breaking even. I knew I needed to turn a profit so had my eye on opening another shop. A friend wanted in on the deal but had a few things to take care of himself.

A few years passed and my first shop was really struggling for a number of reasons, by this time as an act of almost desperation I opened the second shop as a partner to this friend.

I put the stock in he paid the set up costs. It wasn't enough to save the first shop, thankfully I had started freelancing and this was doing great. So we struck a new deal in that I'd kick back a proportion of this income.

The money from the first shop was still in the second shop. The 'friend' a year later then decided he didn't think things were working out so we went separate ways. I was quite happy with this as the freelancing side was doing really well but it was his call so didn't feel guilty.

There was sadly a sting in the tail. The second shop still owed a lot of cash to the first shop. Due to illness the liquidator never chased it but I now had the bank trying to claim on an overdraft guarantee (which I never agreed but that's another story), so if the friend failed to pay then I'd be potentially liable.

He failed and we're not friends no more:)

A convenient selective memory meant that his recollection of events meant he felt that he only owed a few quid despite the evidence clearly being many thousands.

Atheist Pondering

I'm not so much an atheist as an anti-theist. It goes like this:-

  • Believer - Believes there is a God and believes that that God spoke to Muhammad or Jesus was the son of God or .
  • Agnostic - Doesn't know or maybe even care
  • Atheist - Doesn't believe in Father Christmas or pixies at the bottom of the garden or Muhammad was talking to God or Jesus was the son of God.
  • Antitheist - As above but also it sounds like a bad idea.
Case in point is the recent fuss over the Catholic church appearing almost infested with paedophiles. Now if you go that way then who is going to forgive you, well there you go in the Catholic church God forgives everything as long as you believe.

You can do ANYTHING as long as you repent and he'll forgive you, it's like an advert for that type and lets be honest scum of the earth they are as well.

Just another Day - Google Campaigns & Parents Evening

Just another day on work doing Goggle campaigns, this is version 524 :P

Seriously my company spends a lot of money on marketing and these days Goggle is king so it figures that's where I spend my time.

Went to my sons parent evening overall he's doing good but got the usual 'could try harder'. When his teacher was going off on him about homework etc I did feel at one point that I was going say 'yes Miss, sorry Miss'.

That would have been a Homer Simpson moment.

Still playing Bejeweled far too much on Facebook. Yeah Friday tomorrow!

Having some issues in work with Network, tried a few routers now and the various network devices simply refuse to take an IP that is reserved for them. I suspect the switch we have is dicky.

I've had this issue once before where a Director came into work having set up internet connection sharing, that was a fun day. It was a very basic network so most of the PC's / laptops happily took an IP address off his PC, mass confusion as half the office could see network printers etc and half couldn't.

Sky seems to be working again now, I suspect overheating on the Sky HD Box.

Having Problems with SKY HD Full System Reset

Been having problems with a brand new Sky HD box. This is what I've tried.

Sky HD Box full system reset.

All your Recorded data will be Erased.
  • Un plug the box from the mains
  • Press and hold the ‘left’ and ‘right’ navigation buttons on the front of the box and plug the mains back in.
  • Continue holding the buttons in for about 20 seconds, when the green circle on the front lights up and spins, press the Select button.
  • (on the front of the digibox between the left and right buttons you were holding).
  • The sky plus recording logo lights will spin backwards and the full system reset starts. It takes about 5 minutes to complete.

Still no joy, time to phone sky.

Ohh quick tip most awesome site to save money on phone calls Say No to 0870

The site lists many well known companies, and their equivalent geographical numbers.

Alternatives listed for 0500, 0800, 0808, 0844, 0845, 0870 and 0871 numbers.

Spreadex - Worth a Go?

I like a flutter and have met people who literally spend their entire time arbitrage Betting. Have been considering looking at spread betting for sometime and might well consider going for Spreadex, the Spreadex Video looks quite impressive!

Still not sure I've got a system that mostly breaks even now sometimes pays out but it's a recreational thing really.

NHS Rant

Thought I'd start going off on one about various things. I follow some debates like the NHS one, should smokers, drinkers fat people get treated on the NHS.

This seems a dam stupid position if you ask me.

We are all going to die, so the burden on the NHS isn't dependant upon what the population does but simply the population.

So take your vegetarian, excersises a lot perfect healthy person, they going to hit 80 odd and from the age of 70 probably going to be a burden on the NHS. Then take a smoker who works all his life and dies of a heart attack at 60.

So if you carry the debate to it's logcal conclusion then we should all encourage everyone to do things that would casue them to die quickly.

Daft.

Electronic Cigarette and Giving Up Smoking

I have tried a lot to give up smoking and recently got the Genuis Electronic Cigarette. It works ok but lacks something.... It doesn't come with nicotiene this one and I know others on the market do.

I've tried to give up so much still smoking though:( My next target is to cut back, smoke a really low tar brand like Silk Cut Silver and maybe get down to five a day.

The patches gave my weird dreams and didn't seem to kill the craving much, the inhaler isn't bad maybe that combined with the Electronic Cigarette will do the trick.

Snapping up Domains

I've been buying domains recently.

ASOS Sale
I've never heard of this company but traffic seems high, my intention is look for bargains on ASOS clothing and highlight in the blog.

Cross Keys Pub
I have no idea why I bought this, used to go to a pub called the cross keys but it's still a random buy. The domain is quite nice though so thought I use it to compare pubs called Cross Keys Pubs.

Mothers Day Gift Dilema

I had trying to find something for mothers day it's a pain. I suppose I could cop out and get flowers or something, I might even go for the Digital Video memo I featured on Cheap Gifts, not sure yet.

Having to buy something 'from' the kids and for my mum is a bit of pain.

Quick Guide to Newsgroups in Three Steps

Newsgroups are the fastest way to download anything. Forget torrents or any other file sharing program where you may or may not get an acceptable speed. If you pick a good news provider then you'll max out your connection!

1) Get a news server
It's vital to get a decent news server service, I use possibly one the most expensive but I think the best Giganews.

2) Get a News reader
Again there are free programs but I use Newsleecher, at the time of writing their site was down so link is to a beta version.

3) Once you've installed a News Reader set up your server in the program then it's time to get some NZB files. I was using Newzbin.com but recently it's be troublesome so I'm trying NZB Club. It's free and I've literally tried it twice but it looks ok.

Downloading via NewsGroups

I'll get a full guide on this up soon but newzbin.com has been having issues for me of late so had to go searching elsewhere. As a provider of nzb files I'm trying NZB Club

Stink on Domain Names

I run a few domains and one I bought has caused a bit of stink. Dwell Furniture is a style of furniture inspired by the famous American Dwell Magazine. So I bought Dwell Furniture to discuss the same sort of style and also cover the Dwell UK company.

The Dwell Furniture company were not keen and it seems that the search engines don't like it either. The company I work for placed adverts on the site, they sell furniture and the site is about furniture.

I work with an Old Fart

He's always moaning about new technology, actually shorten that, he's always moaning.

Anyway I've set him up with a blog now so he can moan away at leisure, his first post is moaning about Mobile phones.

Thursday, 25 February 2010

Oops

Some time back I bought a few speculative domains looking at the history of various furniture retailers.

One of these was Dwell Furniture, the company Dwell are starting to now kick up a fuss. You have to ask why they didn't buy the domain in the first place if it's so dam precious to them.

Welsh Webcam Now Live

I finally managed to set up the rightpricefurniture webcam. We've put it on a page which is labelled the Wales Webcam.

The way it's set up is via a trigger, set to time of once every minute. Rge page itself uses javascript to refresh the image every minute.

It's pretty cool the trigger automatically FTP's the image upto an ftp location and our web dev takes that image from there.

Panosonic BL-C131 Webcam

Had a few issues setting this up, nice camera though.

I had set it up to work in IPv6 but had to change it back to IPv4 then made sure I entered gateway and DNS servers.

Seems that otherwise the camera doesn't move to dyanmic ip but auto sets up on 192.168.0.253.

The ftp interface is pretty easy as it uses triggers which are a simple step by step thing to follow.

As I say nice functions on the camera for the price paid.
