William Lane Craig Refuted: Cosmological Argument

I actually quite like watching William Lane Craig debate, it seems to me that most theists are either take a literal view of the Bible or are so wishy-washy in their cherry picking it is like trying to hit a moving target.

At least WLC is consistent and logical, fair play to him he is clever as well. My aim here is concisely counter the argument and not refute them but reduce the arguments to assertions.

This is why I recognise WLC as being clever, the arguments he proposes are not refutable so the best you can do is reduce them to assertions. In a debate situation he sets up an argument which, in the traditional sense, is not refutable so to the audience it appears that he does not lose.

Lets us move on today we are looking at the Cosmological Argument WLC normally presents this thus:-
  1. Whatever begins to exist has a cause
  2. The universe began to exist
  3. Therefore, the universe has a cause
  4. This cause is the God of Classical Theism, and is a personal being, because He chose to create the universe

Let us go through these in logical order, the obsevation (1) Whatever begins to exist has a cause is flawed. The words "begin" and "cause" do not really make sense, time began with the big bang.

You cannot make a presumption based on the behaviour of things in this universe and apply that presumption to things outside of the universe.

This is flawed logic pure and simple, the argument is based on a build up of premises if the first premise is flawed the entire argument is flawed.

The comeback that WLC often comes back with is that 'atheists assert that the universe popped into existence' that is a straw man. I'm no cosmologist as you might have guessed however with regard to the Universe I DO NOT assert it popped into existence my answer is:-

I DO NOT KNOW

Sage Hack Use Multiple Companies

I used to be able to do this via copying Sage calling it Sage2 then manually editing the company file to a new data path. In more recent versions of Sage this has become tricky as the location of the Company file is no under.

All Users\Application Data\Sage\2010\

So if you want to switch companies then you have to manually edit the company file each time, not so easy. Found this little guide which will switch it for you.

William Lane Craig Refuted

I kind of like William Lane Craig but his arguments mostly dissolve into assertions no better than personally testimony.

They normally take the following form:-

1) Cosmological Argument
2) Objective Moral Values
3) Fine Tuning universe designed for life
4) Resurrection
5) Good god

Over the next few weeks I'm going to go through them one by and refute them all, ok maybe not refute but at least reduce them down to assertions. They all have things in common you cannot absolutely disprove them but then you cannot disprove god or flying dragons or pixies.

However we can reduce them to assertions.

Almost forgot joined the British Humanist Association they are an organisation that fit me almost perfectly.

Sympathies to Gary Speed's family

Just heard the shocking news that Gary Speed has committed suicide what a sad day for Welsh Football a manager that surely had a great future ahead of him.

Welsh Football's loss is nothing in comparison to the families loss though and my thoughts are with them at this time.

According to the BBC, BBC Gary Speed News Story

"A statement from Cheshire Police stated that: "On the morning of Sunday 27th November the Cheshire Police Constabulary was told of a sudden death at an address in Huntington in Chester."

Very sad news.

GTA Four Most Overrated Game ever

Well I got GTA 4 after the professional reviewers were cooing after it and I must say it is biggest pile of garbage I have ever played. Got stuck on a mission and I had to repeat the start over and over and over. Rockstar you suck!

Ok i might not be very good but why would I want to play a game that forces you to repeat the same process over and over. Professional reviewers must have been some back handers going on not to spot that massive flaw in game play design.

Reseller Hosting Reviews

Been busy lately, work wise with a few more clients and a few sites here and there. Technically I have been having a lot of issues with a forum based site. Religion and Ethics gets a lot of traffic from the community but the database was going through a series of crashes which I think I'm now on top of.

The big downside is that I have had to buy some other hosting. I think it would be an interesting insight into which reseller hosting offers the best service when it comes to reseller hosting and might help someone make a decision, so this is a sort of review for hosting.

I have known of Fast hosts for some time and my impression was they were ok, I got a reseller deal for £20 a month with unlimited bandwidth, 5 SQL databases and effectively unlimited websites.

The big attraction for me is the ability to create both Linux and PHP packages so then I could run a variety of different types of sites and was not limited to one platform.

Even just running a few WordPress sites was problematic, they would often be down I would contact support and they would just reply 'they are not down.' I think their support team must have targets or something where if a crash occurs then someone somewhere gets into trouble.

So the effect is that it is best to blame it on the customer and goes thus:-

  • Customer reports Issue to Fasthosts Support
  • Support fixes issue but records it customer error to prevent anyone at Fasthosts getting into trouble

The customer is not going to complain too much as long as their site is up. However I started getting issues with the SQL database crashing on Religion and Ethics Forum and their replies were the code is faulty.

After about the sixth crash and a lot of headaches I decided it was time to rule out for definite this alleged database issue.

I ordered a Uk2 hosting package moved the database there and had no crash's.

UK2 also supported bigger files when restoring a database, so made the process that much easier. So overall currently my opinion is that UK2 beats Fasthosts.

SMF or Fast-hosts Caused the Error

Spent a lot of time over the last few days trying to get an SMF database back (religion and Ethics Forum). This has happened before, it all starts with an Apache error on trying to log in to the database (phph myadmin) I get max number of connections exceeded error message.

Last time I got around this by creating another database user and repairing some of the tables and getting Fast Hosts to clear the connections. This time though that is not working and it takes ages to type phrases into google and stare at pages for ten minutes only to decide the issue being discussed is not relevant to my issue.

Time gets eaten up fast and frustration starts to kick in, so much so I've called time on the issue for now.

DVD Computer Help

Trying to help out a sweet mature lady with watching a DVD after her set top box was broken. I suggested she watch it on the computer, 'Can it do that' she asked, her next question confused me though.

'Does it need to be on?'

Meta Reviews

Recently I have come to the conclusion that Wordpress is in fact awesome. I've been meaning to set up a site which collates reviews and allows consumers to post reviews as well. Meta Reviews was a domain that seemed to fit the bill.

The sheer amount of Wordpress plug ins that you can get was amazing!

EDL A Massive Own Goal

Lets be frank here the EDL are mostly a bunch of ignorant bunch of lunatics that are up for a fight regardless of the issues at hand.

What massive own goal on their part thought to call themselves the EDL. Come on lunatics the Scottish, the Welsh have quite a few nut-jobs that you have excluded as a result of choosing the wrong name. BDL aka British Defence League would have got more on your side.

Clearly intelligence and passion are not good bedfellows.

More Subjective Morality Debates

One of the major sticking points between theists and atheists is the objective morality debate. It goes like this:-

Premise: There is an objective moral code which is gods.

A killer argument against this:-
Whatever that code is then it is a code not shared by all, in fact if I prepared a multiple choice questionnaire of 100 questions and gave it to 100 Christians I think I would get 100 different sets of answers.

That does not disprove an objective moral code. What it does prove though is that god is woeful at passing this code on.

In fact he is so ineffective why call him god?

Nice.

More Charlie News

Charlie the Cavashon is growing up fast, he really does like his food, he was hungry watched him today pick up his dinner bowl and this is the result.

He could not get on the sofa with his bowl so he took it placed it on the sofa pushed it with his nose, making sure it was secure and then jumped up so he could then take it so he could say in his own way 'feed me'.

We all gathered around and he started at us wondering what all the fuss was about.

Charlie the Cavachon

Now before you see these understand my little girl is only 7!

Click on the image to enlarge.

Loves to play and my daughter as you would no doubt expect adores him.

Never ever knew what a Cavashon was prior to getting him but temperament is fantastic.

I wanted a Labrador but it was never going to happen.

Did inspire me to buy another domain Pre Loved Dogs as we had to pay to contact the person on another site.

We'll have to see how it goes but free to advertise / contact people is pretty cheap I would say.

Enjoy the photos!

Web Marketing Furniture

I got some personal hate tweets! I know I was not a popular chap in the furniture industry after doing the web marketing at Right Price Furniture and it seems working for Oak Furniture Land my fan club is not growing :)

C'est la vie, eh.

Career wise my future is still in the balance although in the last few months I have come to realise that a combination of knowing all the technical in and outs and having a background in an highly competitive sale environment is actually a mix that actually might be in short supply.

Dan Barker Does God Exist Debate

Not seen this debate linked anywhere so thought I would show it here. Another fine performance by Dan Barker.

Debate on the existence of God, contains atheism theism and religion.

Morality is Subjective

Just come off the back of a debate about morality. The poster arguing that morality was objective was quite good. He was claiming that since morality was subjective then why did people search for answers when all they will find is subjective. The bottom line was this

When faced with a moral question humans will look for an objective answer based upon their morality. Their morality is subjective.

Saw confusion over morality and moral question. Just to given an example. Abortion, Fred says 'wrong', Joe says 'right', if they are subjective views then they are both correct.

When you look at the process though it is different. Joe bases his morality on religious teachings, Fred on humanism.

So Fred and Joe are giving objective answers based on their morality. This morality is subjective.

Secular Ten Commandments

Recently I have been hanging around the BBC forums Religion and Ethics messages boards which prompted me to write my very rough off the top of my head Secular Ten Commandments. It is interesting to listen to the views of those that have a religion and they do vary quite a lot, there are those that believe every word of the Bible and stick religiously to it.

In some way I admire the fundamentalists, for example there are some Young Earth types there and their viewpoint I think if any part of their holy scripture is incorrect then it all falls apart. So they search for the slightest gap in evidence for evolution or the age of the universe and pin their hopes there.

On the work front I'm freelancing for a company that is doing work for an On Line Off Licence, very much better to be writing about alcohol rather than furniture for a change. I hardly could be called an expert in this regard but the amount of drinks on the market is really rather surprising.

Home, we are after a dog there seems to be a distinct lack of sites that allow you to advertise Dogs or Puppies for sale for free so I have started up Preloved Dogs, it does need a lot of work but I think the principle is pretty solid.

Blogger Plans

I liked what Google have planned in Blogger from watching their latest video, see below.

I do know that Google are really convinced the future of the entire industry is in the mobile market, I do agree, tablets and smart phones (Android rocks) are the future.

Towards the end of the video you see this functionality in action. Recently I have used Wordpress a lot more but Blogger is very easy to get a web site and you can do a decent job with a commercial website quite easily.

Recently I tried this out for a website doing Garden Fencing which I think looks good, ok it is not earth shattering but it sure is cost effective.

Gods Wife Asherah

Will be looking forward to this episode of BBC's Bibles Buried secrets this week where they look if God Had a Wife. Credit to some the religious community for not going off on one about the myths being ripped apart by cold scientific analysis. Not all of course as I have seen some manic posts in various forums along the lines of 'How dare they!'.

One person even went as far as to claim that the program claimed that David the Jewish leader did not exist. I felt last weeks program conclusion was that King David was unproven rather then proved not to exist. The final part of the program did underline a clear motive for a myth to be created or furthered.

Egpyt and The Path to World War 3

I think it is great that Egypt are hopefully moving in the direction of a free democratic society.

However I think the reality is that it will soon be another thoecracy and in the process the world takes another step in the direction of another global conflict.

I listened to the BBC World Service Phone in program, World Have Your Say, and representatives from the Muslim Brotherhood were on there.

They were repeatedly asked 'Does Israel have a right to exist?' and eventually answered with an effective 'no'.

This does not bode well for the area.

More O Reilly Bashing

Colbert's take on this was quite good. I fail to see how O Reilly has any creditability left to present a mainstream TV Show. Mind we are talking Fox, I would be gutted if he was taken off air it is just so much fun.

Anyway to the clip it made me laugh a few times. Bill recently responded to the critics of his understanding of the world but clearing up everything basically he said 'OK Moon causes tides, but the Moon proves God as you cannot explain the Moon.'

Colbert then rips into him in a way only he can do.

The Teapot, Teapotians and Teapotianity

The person that did this claims on You Tube that they did it for a school project. Amazing quality if this is true.

All hail the teapot, though shall not blaspheme thy teapot.

I am now a convert to Teapotianity, all Teapotians and will always make thy glorious sign of thy holy teapot when in the presence of any religious event or structure.

Bill O Reilly is a Total Tool

This is class IO Reilly who clearly cannot be that educated debates an atheist and in the video he argues there must be a God as the tide goes up and then it goes down not a miscommunication.

Ok first of all physics and second tsunami. Game over, how can anyone on national TV be that ignorant it is a worry for the the United States you have someone like that on national television. Ok it is Fox but come on America sort it out, not so much land of the free but land of the plain dumb stupid.

Have changed the video now as it had been edited badly.

Is Paki an Offensive Term?

I play an online Football Manager Version namely Football manager Live and recently a player was generated with a first name of Pakie.

Some debate over if this term was offensive. Now this is my understanding so if you think I'm wrong just leave a comment so it can be discussed.

Here was the post that I made in the forums for Football Manager Live.

Actually I think the term Paki us most offensive to Indians. A bit like a common conversation you can have with a lot of Yanks :p

'Are you English?'

'No I'm from Wales'

'That is in England right?'

'FFS'

If you really want to wind someone up and meet someone from Sunderland, call them Geordie, they get awfully upset. :)

The N word is more offensive as it is used racially not nationally or regionally.
